Tajikistan Launches Climate Risk Management Project with UN and Swiss Support

Tajikistan, in collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), has launched a new Climate Risk Management (CRM) Project. The initiative aims to bolster the resilience of vulnerable communities against climate and disaster risks.

The Climate Risk Management Project will help strengthen national systems and community resilience by enabling earlier action, better preparedness and more effective responses to climate-related risks.

Funded by the Government of Switzerland, the project will focus on enhancing risk management systems, improving early warning mechanisms, and implementing anticipatory actions. It also seeks to strengthen social protection measures and develop climate risk financing solutions. The CRM Project builds upon previous resilience and disaster risk management efforts in Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic. The Agency for Hydrometeorology will play a crucial role by improving weather and climate monitoring, enhancing forecasts, and providing reliable climate information to aid disaster preparedness and response.

The launch event in Dushanbe convened government representatives, development partners, and regional organizations from Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and the Kyrgyz Republic. Participants reviewed the project's inception phase findings and confirmed commitments for its implementation through 2030. WFP Representative Siemon Hollema emphasized that the project will enable "earlier action, better preparedness and more effective responses to climate-related risks."

Switzerland is pleased to contribute to this project not only as a co-financier, but also by sharing its long-standing experience in disaster risk reduction, natural hazard management, and risk-informed approaches.

Denise Lüthi Crișan from the Swiss Cooperation Office highlighted Switzerland's contribution, not only financially but also through sharing expertise in disaster risk reduction. The project's three key areas include strengthening risk assessment and early warning systems, improving emergency response through anticipatory action and shock-responsive social protection, and developing climate risk insurance for agriculture. The importance of regional cooperation across Central Asia was also stressed.
