Tajikistan marks National Unity Day

Tajikistan is observing National Unity Day on June 27, a significant public holiday marking the conclusion of its civil war and the return of peace. This year's observance falls on the 29th anniversary of the General Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and National Accord in Tajikistan. Signed in Moscow on June 27, 1997, by opposing factions, the agreement is widely recognized as a cornerstone of modern Tajik history.

The peace accord effectively ended the nation's civil conflict, paving the way for national reconciliation, political stability, and state-building. The journey toward peace began in April 1994 with inter-Tajik negotiations initiated under United Nations auspices. These talks spanned over three years, culminating in the landmark 1997 agreement. The accord integrated protocols from eight rounds of discussions between the Tajik government and the United Tajik Opposition (UTO), alongside outcomes from meetings between the Tajik President and the UTO leader, and further consultations in various international cities.

National Unity Day is celebrated annually throughout Tajikistan with official ceremonies and public events. These gatherings serve to honor the peace process and reinforce the enduring importance of national unity, reconciliation, and stability.
