Takashi Kashiwabara's Brother Undergoes Surgery for Severe Intestinal Bleeding

Shigeru Kashiwabara, the 47-year-old younger brother of Japanese actor Takashi Kashiwabara, faced a medical emergency after discovering blood in his stool. He was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with severe colonic diverticulitis, prompting an urgent surgical intervention due to significant bleeding.

Kashiwabara shared his condition on Instagram, explaining that the excessive bleeding necessitated immediate surgery. Fortunately, the procedure was successful, and he has since been removed from critical danger. The incident has understandably concerned his fans.

According to health education materials from the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, colonic diverticulitis develops when small pouches, or diverticula, form in the colon wall. This condition is often linked to abnormal bowel movements, a lack of dietary fiber, or chronic constipation. While many with diverticula experience no symptoms, inflammation can cause severe abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and vomiting. In about 10-25% of cases, diverticulitis occurs, with potential complications including severe bleeding, perforation, abscess formation, peritonitis, sepsis, and shock, which can be fatal.

Doctors emphasize the importance of a high-fiber diet in daily life to promote smooth bowel movements and effectively prevent diverticulitis. The symptoms of right-sided colonic diverticulitis can sometimes be mistaken for acute appendicitis, highlighting the need for accurate medical diagnosis.
