Tallinn Rejects Quarry Expansion; Businesses Fear Dust and Damage

Limestone Factories of Estonia (LFE) has proposed exploring a nearly 11-hectare site in Lasnamäe, Tallinn, to prepare for an expansion of the Väo limestone quarry. The company states the proposed study, designated Väo XXI, is driven by a perceived shortage of high-quality construction stone in the Tallinn area. LFE aims to precisely determine the extent, quality, thickness, and mining conditions of the limestone deposit within the Paneeli tn 2c, Peterburi tee 90, and Sõstramäe tn 1 properties.

However, the Tallinn city government has declared both the proposed geological study and any potential future mining operations as unjustified. Neighboring businesses are also firmly against the expansion, expressing concerns about potential dust pollution and damage to their properties. The city's opposition suggests a conflict between industrial resource needs and urban development or environmental considerations.

LFE's justification for the exploration hinges on the increasing demand for construction materials in the rapidly developing capital region. The company believes a detailed survey is essential to assess the viability and conditions for extracting more limestone. This move highlights the ongoing tension between resource extraction and urban planning, particularly in areas close to existing infrastructure and businesses.
