Tamaulipas government highlights poverty reduction and 1.8 million Welfare homes

Mexico has a clear direction and a national project under construction, Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya said while reviewing President Claudia Sheinbaum’s second government report.

Speaking on his program Diálogos con Américo, Villarreal described the country as entering a new stage of transformation. He said the process aims to improve living conditions through housing, food, health care, education, and decent, fairly paid work. He also pointed to advances in infrastructure, science, and technology, while placing the restructuring of society around a humanist vision at the center.

Villarreal linked the Fourth Transformation to earlier turning points in Mexican history, including Independence, the Reform, and the Revolution. “The transformation has arrived; we have to keep working,” he said, arguing that major national changes develop over time and gradually create the conditions for consolidation.

He credited the transformation begun under former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and continued by Sheinbaum. “We are on the right path,” Villarreal said, describing Sheinbaum’s administration as giving the process fresh impetus. He said Mexican humanism calls for governments that remain close to communities, respond to people’s needs, and prioritize resources under the principle of a moral economy.

The governor said welfare programs currently reach about 43 million people nationwide. He also cited a reduction of 20 million people living in poverty, a goal of 1.8 million Welfare homes, infrastructure development, educational scholarships, and efforts to strengthen the health system through prevention and health promotion. Villarreal added that political and economic power should keep a healthy distance, contrasting that approach with what he described as the mixing of interests during the neoliberal period.
