Tangerang Records 203 New HIV Cases Early 2026, Primarily Among Gay Men

Tangerang Regency in Indonesia has reported a significant increase in new HIV cases, with 203 individuals diagnosed between January and April 2026. The local AIDS Handling Commission (KPA) stated that while cases were found across various risk groups, including sex workers and injecting drug users, the highest number were identified among men who have sex with men (MSM), also referred to as gay individuals.

Eko Darmawan, Program Manager for KPA Kabupaten Tangerang, explained that the elevated incidence within the MSM community is medically linked to the higher risk of HIV transmission through unprotected anal intercourse. He stressed that this is a matter of scientific fact regarding sexual practices, not an indictment of any particular sexual orientation or identity.

Despite the concerning numbers, KPA assures inclusive services for all at-risk groups. They are intensifying outreach through community partners, offering free and confidential HIV testing, and educating the public on the use of protection and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The commission urges residents to undergo regular HIV screenings at designated health facilities to curb further transmission.
