Taraba Governor Signs Executive Orders Against Drug Abuse, Electoral Violence, and Illegal Mining

Taraba State Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas has enacted a series of decisive measures to address critical issues within the state, signing three executive orders over the weekend. These orders target drug abuse and mental health challenges, electoral violence, and the regulation of mining activities, with the overarching goals of protecting lives, reinforcing democratic processes, and ensuring the responsible use of the state's mineral wealth for community benefit.

The first executive order introduces a comprehensive strategy for the prevention, early detection, treatment, and rehabilitation of individuals affected by substance abuse and mental health conditions. It mandates collaboration among various state entities, including ministries, security agencies, healthcare institutions, schools, traditional rulers, and religious organizations. The initiative emphasizes support and rehabilitation over stigmatization, while simultaneously aiming to dismantle drug production and trafficking networks. This approach prioritizes public health and community well-being.

To foster a more peaceful political landscape, the second executive order explicitly prohibits political thuggery, hate speech, voter intimidation, and the carrying of weapons during political gatherings. This order applies universally to all political parties, with enforcement promised to be impartial, intelligence-led, and evidence-based. Security agencies are tasked with identifying potential flashpoints, preventing the movement of armed groups, and investigating the financing of political violence. Governor Kefas affirmed that while peaceful campaigning is guaranteed, any threat to public safety or the arming of youth will not be tolerated.

The third executive order addresses the pervasive issue of illegal and unregulated mining. It aims to enhance the documentation of mining operators, workers, equipment, and sites, fostering greater collaboration between state and federal authorities, host communities, and security agencies. The objective is to combat illegal mining, mineral smuggling, child labor, environmental damage, and the use of mining sites for criminal activities. Governor Kefas assured legitimate investors of a transparent and secure operating environment, underscoring the commitment to responsible resource management. The Secretary to the State Government will oversee the implementation, with security and legal oversight provided by the State Adviser on Security and the Attorney-General.
