Tashkent and Samarkand join FAO Green Cities Network

Tashkent and Samarkand have joined the FAO Green Cities Network, bringing Uzbekistan’s two major cities into a global community focused on greener, healthier, more resilient and inclusive urban environments.

The certificates confirming their membership were issued on August 20 by the Secretariat of the Green Cities Initiative at the Food and Agriculture Organization’s headquarters in Rome. The FAO representation in Uzbekistan and the National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change announced the development.

The network promotes integrated solutions in three areas: urban and peri-urban forestry, urban and peri-urban agriculture, and a sustainable bioeconomy. Membership gives the cities access to technical support, capacity development, knowledge exchange and city-to-city cooperation. It can also help them align with global environmental frameworks, develop partnerships, mobilize resources and attract investment.

The Green Cities Initiative began in 2020 and aims to deliver measurable improvements in urban residents’ health and well-being, as well as environmental conditions, in 1,000 cities worldwide by 2030. Tashkent and Samarkand’s first step will be an initial self-assessment, with guidance from the initiative’s secretariat. The process will identify priorities for each city and help tailor technical assistance to local needs.

Membership in the FAO Green Cities Network provides Tashkent and Samarkand with opportunities to access technical support and capacity development, exchange knowledge and experience, participate in city-to-city collaboration platforms, receive support in aligning with relevant global frameworks and environmental agendas, develop partnerships, mobilize resources and facilitate investment, as well as enhance their international visibility as leading cities advancing sustainable urban solutions.
