Tauson cruises past Bejlek to reach Athens semifinals

Clara Tauson showcased a dominant performance in the Athens quarterfinals, securing a confident victory over her toughest opponent to date in the WTA 250 tournament. The 23-year-old Danish player, who holds the top seed in the Greek hardcourt event, defeated Czech Republic's Sara Bejlek, ranked 42nd in the world, with a score of 6-2, 6-3 on Friday.

Tauson, currently ranked 30th globally, proved to be significantly superior to her 20-year-old opponent, despite Bejlek appearing to be a challenging contender beforehand. This win propels Tauson into the semifinals, where she is set to face another Czech opponent, the 30-year-old Barbora Krejcikova, who is ranked 32nd in the world.

Tauson has ample reason to approach the upcoming match with high confidence, following her outstanding performance in the quarterfinal. She broke Bejlek's serve early in the first set and, despite a slight struggle to hold her own serve, established a solid lead. Tauson broke serve again in the seventh game, and the Czech player seemed to concede the first set as Tauson closed it out.

The momentum carried into the second set, with Tauson creating another break point in the opening game. She came close to another break in Bejlek's second service game of the set, holding three break points, but Bejlek fought back effectively to stay in contention. In the seventh game, it was Bejlek's turn to serve, and Tauson delivered several exceptional shots. While this should have been enough for another break, Tauson made a few unforced errors, missing the opportunity. Bejlek played well overall, but Tauson was a level above, ultimately securing the victory with a final break in the ninth game.
