Teacher hailed hero for protecting students during Manchester school stabbing

A teacher has been lauded as a hero for his bravery in shielding students during a knife attack at a Manchester school. Maysum Abdullah, 27, a teacher at Co-op Academy Manchester, intervened when violence erupted in a classroom on Tuesday, sustaining injuries to his neck and hand.

Abdullah is recovering at home after receiving hospital treatment. His wife, Saima, described him as a "hero" for his actions, stating that he "entered teaching to make a positive difference in young people's lives and he is truly a hero for protecting and safeguarding those children." She noted that while his physical wounds would heal, the emotional impact would linger.

A 14-year-old girl has been charged with three counts of attempted murder and two counts of possessing a bladed article. She is scheduled to appear in court on Friday. Two other 14-year-old pupils were injured but have since been released from the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is being handled by Counter Terrorism Policing North West due to the circumstances, though the incident has not been classified as terrorism. The suspect was initially detained under the Mental Health Act before being taken into police custody.
