Team Nigeria eyes Commonwealth Fencing Glory

Lagos is set to host the Commonwealth Fencing Federation Championships from August 9 to 14, with Team Nigeria expressing strong anticipation and ambition. The national squad features promising young talents, including Adebodunri Thomas and Alex Chizim Aninyei, who previously made their mark at the African Championships.

I have very high expectations and I think it’s going to be really challenging; this won’t be like the African Championships. I hope to reach the last 16 again, as I did in the Junior African Championships. More importantly, fencing against some of the world’s top athletes is a great opportunity. I’ve trained every day since returning from school, working with my coach on new techniques, and I’m eager to put them into practice.

Seventeen-year-old Thomas, Nigeria's top-ranked female épée fencer, acknowledges the challenge of competing against world-class athletes. She aims to reach the last 16, mirroring her performance at the Junior African Championships, and is eager to implement new techniques honed during her daily training. "I have very high expectations and I think it’s going to be really challenging," Thomas stated, emphasizing the significant step up from continental competitions.

Nineteen-year-old Aninyei shares the excitement, viewing the championships as a "wonderful opportunity to represent Nigeria." He aims to advance from the pool stages to the direct elimination rounds and secure a medal. "My goal is to qualify from the pools, reach the direct elimination rounds, and, of course, win a medal," he declared.

National coach Ibrahim Alogba is confident in the team's preparation and current strength. "We’re very ready, and we still have time to prepare further," Alogba affirmed. He highlighted the team's increased unity and the benefits of exposure to international tournaments, expressing belief in their medal potential. The championships present a significant opportunity for Nigeria to demonstrate its progress in fencing on the global stage.
