Antonelli and Leclerc capitalized on faster pit stops to move up the order, with Antonelli eventually taking second place. Russell initially held third after a pit stop during a virtual safety car period, which was deployed after Esteban Ocon's Haas stopped on track. However, the team's directive led him to let Antonelli pass, a move that put his own podium position under threat from Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
