Tech giant Google slapped with $1 billion EU fine for anti-competitive practices

Google has been hit with a significant penalty from European regulators, facing a fine of approximately $1 billion (860 million euros) for practices deemed to be undermining market competition. The European Commission in Brussels stated that the tech giant leveraged its dominant position as the world's leading search engine to unfairly promote its own services.

According to regulators, Google displayed its services more prominently at the top of search results, pushing competing services further down the page. This alleged practice is central to the EU's accusation that Google has been engaging in anti-competitive behavior.

The ruling is poised to intensify transatlantic trade friction. Former U.S. President Donald Trump had previously voiced strong opposition to what he perceived as the EU's unfair targeting of American technology firms, even threatening retaliatory measures. The timing of this Google penalty is particularly sensitive, as the U.S. was reportedly considering a new round of tariffs against the EU and other major trading partners.

This latest fine follows a substantial penalty imposed on Google in September 2025, amounting to billions of dollars, for violating competition rules within its advertising business. At that time, Trump publicly criticized the decision as a "great blow against a great American company" and warned of initiating tariffs if U.S. corporations continued to be penalized.
