Teen charged over fatal NT crash involving allegedly stolen vehicle

Northern Territory police have charged a 16-year-old boy with a series of offenses following a fatal crash that occurred in Katherine last month. The incident involved a vehicle that was allegedly stolen.

The crash took place on the Stuart Highway, approximately 3 kilometers north of Katherine, in the early hours of June 2. A 16-year-old boy tragically died at the scene when the vehicle rolled. Five other teenagers, ranging in age from 13 to 17, who were also in the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital.

Investigators identified another 16-year-old boy as an occupant of the vehicle who had sought medical attention for minor injuries at a local clinic. Police apprehended the 16-year-old, who they allege was the driver at the time of the crash, on Friday. He faces charges including driving a motor vehicle causing death, careless driving causing death, and five counts of recklessly endangering life.

Further charges against the teenager include two counts of driving a motor vehicle without consent, driving a motor vehicle in a dangerous manner, aggravated burglary, and driving without a license. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Police are continuing their investigation and urge anyone with information to come forward.
