Teenager admits business break-ins, assault on woman sleeping rough

A young man has pleaded guilty to serious criminal trespass for breaking into several businesses in Adelaide's southern suburbs. He also previously admitted to causing harm with intent to a woman who was sleeping rough. The 18-year-old appeared in the Adelaide Youth Court on Friday, where the prosecution sought to have his case moved to the District Court for sentencing as an adult. They cited "extremely serious" offending and "harrowing nine-minute-long footage" of the attack. However, the defense is contesting this, arguing for the case to remain in the Youth Court. They presented "very positive reports from youth justice" and highlighted the defendant's "complex mental health issues," including a long-standing ADHD diagnosis and undiagnosed autism spectrum disorder. The victim, a 64-year-old woman, was sleeping near Mitcham Memorial Library when she was attacked in November 2025, suffering kicks and punches to her head and body. She was hospitalized in a serious but stable condition. Magistrate John Wells urged both sides to consider the "highly vulnerable" parties involved and the importance of resolving the case efficiently. He emphasized that the victim's interests and the "highly vulnerable child in custody" were paramount. The defendant remains in custody awaiting his September court date.
