Tehran sees SCO summit as an opportunity to counter US policy

Iranian lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi has described the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek as a “golden opportunity” for expanding economic partnerships across the region and resisting US policy.

Boroujerdi, a member of Iran’s parliamentary commission on national security and foreign policy, pointed to Iran’s geographic position and its network of land, rail and Caspian routes. He said those connections could support wider trade and economic cooperation with neighboring countries.

He also framed the summit against what he called a crisis imposed by the United States in the Persian Gulf. In his view, the SCO platform offered a way to oppose Washington’s “expansionist policy” while strengthening regional partnerships.

The meeting is being held in Bishkek under Kyrgyzstan’s chairmanship, with the slogan “25 Years of the SCO: Together Toward Sustainable Peace, Development and Prosperity.” Discussions include regional security and the use of artificial intelligence in the economy. Participants are expected to adopt the Bishkek Declaration, whose draft had already been agreed by the organization’s foreign ministers.

The SCO includes Belarus, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
