Tel Aviv's Animix festival combines political satire with tributes

Tel Aviv's Animix International Animation, Comics, and Caricature Festival is set to open its doors from August 4-8 at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, offering a diverse program of exhibitions, performances, film screenings, and workshops. Now in its 26th year, Animix stands as Israel's premier annual event dedicated to animation, comics, illustration, and caricature, catering to both seasoned enthusiasts and general audiences.

This year's festival program is particularly attuned to the current political and social landscape of Israel. Artists are responding to the nation's complex realities, including elections, ongoing conflicts, trauma, and the events of October 7, through various artistic mediums such as satire, personal storytelling, and animation. This focus ensures the festival provides a platform for contemporary dialogue and artistic reflection.

Moroccan cartoonist and comics artist Saad Jalal will be the festival's guest of honor. With over two decades of experience publishing in the Moroccan press, Jalal has created exhibitions addressing human rights, especially women's rights in Morocco, and authored the satirical book 'Reform in Corruption.' At Animix, he will deliver an illustrated lecture titled 'Caricature – Between Fiction and Intelligence,' exploring the evolving role of cartoonists in the digital age of smartphones, fake news, and artificial intelligence.

The festival will also honor Israeli illustrator, animator, and comics creator Dovi Keich with its lifetime achievement award. Keich is recognized for his extensive work for children and young adults, including popular comic-book series like 'Arthur' and 'Blu & Max.' Additionally, American producer Fonda Snyder, an executive producer of the Sony Pictures Animation feature 'GOAT,' will be a featured guest. The festival will also include a special tribute to the acclaimed Iranian-French graphic novelist, filmmaker, and human rights activist Marjane Satrapi, who passed away in June. The tribute, titled 'Marjane Satrapi Is Not Dead,' will feature discussions by cartoonist Michel Kichka, graphic novelist Rutu Modan, and journalist Nirit Anderman, examining Satrapi's artistic journey and impact.
