Temperatures to Reach 32°C as Thunderstorms and Hail Hit Central and Southern South Korea

Scattered showers could bring thunder, lightning, strong winds and hail to central inland areas and southern South Korea on Wednesday, with the Korea Meteorological Administration warning that some hailstones could measure at least 0.5 centimeters across.

Rain is expected in parts of the southern inland Gangwon region and the central region through the morning. Between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., showers could develop across central inland areas, the south and Jeju Island. Hourly rainfall may reach 20 to 30 millimeters in affected areas.

Forecast rainfall from the showers ranges from 5 to 40 millimeters in parts of Daejeon, Sejong, South Chungcheong and North Chungcheong, and in Jeonbuk and Gwangju-South Jeolla. Daegu-North Gyeongsang could receive 5 to 60 millimeters, while Busan-Ulsan-South Gyeongsang and Jeju could see 5 to 50 millimeters.

Some areas, mainly the inland central region and southern regions, may receive showers accompanied by thunder and lightning along with strong winds, and some areas may also see hail.

Heat advisories remain in effect for southern regions and Jeju. The perceived temperature there is expected to rise to around 33°C through Sept. 3, and some southern areas could experience tropical nights through the following day. Forecasters advised residents to manage indoor temperatures and drink enough water, while also taking precautions to protect facilities and crops from hail and gusty winds.

Central areas will remain mostly cloudy, and the south and Jeju mostly cloudy to partly cloudy. Highs will range from 25°C to 32°C, including 29°C in Seoul, 32°C in Gwangju and Daegu, and 32°C on Jeju. Fine dust concentrations are expected to remain at good levels across the country.
