Ten killed, over 60 injured in fireworks explosion at Mexican church festival

At least 10 people were killed and 64 injured when pyrotechnic material exploded during a patron saint festival in central Mexico, leaving victims trapped beneath debris.

The blast occurred on Saturday night beside the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church in Temascalcingo, a municipality in Mexico State about 160 kilometers northwest of Mexico City. Hundreds of people had gathered to watch the fireworks connected to the religious festival, according to local reports.

The explosion caused a wall or part of an adjacent structure to collapse. Residents and emergency personnel moved through smoke and rubble as they searched for survivors. Video shared on social media showed dozens of people combing the area after the blast.

Authorities had not established what caused the explosion. The Mexico State Attorney General's Office opened an investigation. A local bishop said two priests were among those injured.
