Tennis: Chan Hao-ching's pair defeats Liang En-shuo's team in Toronto doubles 'Taiwanese civil war'

The WTA Toronto tournament saw an all-Taiwanese showdown in the opening round of the women's doubles, pitting Chan Hao-ching against her compatriot Liang En-shuo.

Chan Hao-ching, teaming up with Australia's Maya Joint, secured a victory over the eighth-seeded duo of Liang En-shuo and Japan's Shuko Aoyama. The Taiwanese-Australian pair won the match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, advancing to the Round of 16.

Despite facing a formidable opponent in Liang En-shuo, who recently reached the semifinals in two Grand Slams, Chan and Joint demonstrated strong play. After an initial exchange of service breaks, the Taiwanese-Australian team managed to hold their lead and secure the first set. They continued their momentum in the second set, breaking Liang and Aoyama's serve at a crucial moment to clinch the match.

Their next opponents will be Storm Hunter of Australia and Desirae Krawczyk of the United States. The tournament in Canada is a significant warm-up event for the upcoming US Open Grand Slam. Other Taiwanese players have also advanced, with Hsieh Su-wei and her partner Jelena Ostapenko progressing, and Wu Fang-hsien and her partner Jiang Xinyu also winning their first-round match.
