Tennis: Top seeds Swiatek and Andreeva knocked out early at Bad Homburg

The Wimbledon warm-up tournament in Bad Homburg saw major upsets as top seeds Iga Swiatek and Mirra Andreeva crashed out in their opening matches. The WTA event, held on grass courts, serves as a final preparation for the upcoming Grand Slam tournament.

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek, who had a first-round bye, was defeated by American Emma Navarro in a three-set thriller. Navarro secured the victory with a 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 scoreline. Navarro had previously eliminated Eva Lys, the only German player in the main draw.

Mirra Andreeva, the French Open champion and the second seed in Bad Homburg, also experienced an early exit. The 19-year-old Russian lost her first match after her Roland Garros triumph to compatriot Ekaterina Alexandrova, with a score of 6-3, 4-6. Andreeva, like Swiatek, had also received a bye in the first round.

The tournament boasts a significant prize pool of over one million US dollars. However, for the two highest-ranked players, the event proved to be a disappointing prelude to Wimbledon, which begins on Monday.
