Tens of thousands of pensioners may be unable to identify themselves this week due to government inaction

Tens of thousands of Hungarian pensioners may face difficulties proving their identity this week after a parliamentary vote on a crucial temporary measure was abruptly canceled. The proposed legislation aimed to extend the validity of expired identification cards until the end of the year, a measure intended to prevent widespread issues for seniors.

However, the National Assembly's session, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, was canceled at the last minute by Bálint Ruff, Minister of the Prime Minister's Office, citing extreme heat. This cancellation prevented lawmakers from voting on the amendment, leaving a legislative gap that could impact many citizens.

The Ministry of Interior had previously announced that paper ID cards would expire on August 3rd. While they acknowledged the need for a transitional rule, they stated the parliamentary vote would be delayed until the following week due to the heatwave. The ministry urged affected individuals to apply for new identification, noting that applications can be made at any government office, with or without an appointment. For citizens over 70, the permanent ID card is issued free of charge.

Without a valid driver's license or passport, the affected pensioners might be unable to verify their identity for essential services, such as doctor's appointments, creating a significant hurdle for a vulnerable population. The delay in passing the temporary rule leaves many in an uncertain situation regarding their identification.
