Tent collapses at Virginia church celebration, killing one and injuring 22

A fatal tent collapse at a Virginia church's 20th-anniversary celebration left one person dead and 22 injured Friday evening. The incident occurred as attendees were leaving the tent during a severe thunderstorm that brought heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds to Moneta, a community southwest of Richmond.

Bedford County Fire and Rescue acting chief Abbey Johnston described the scene as initially chaotic, with officials working to account for everyone inside the tent behind the EastLake Community Church. Eleven people were transported to hospitals, while another 11 sustained minor injuries treated at the scene. The church's senior pastor, Troy Keaton, stated that a "dear brother" suffered a fatal injury, expressing heartbreak for the family.

While the tent had a seating capacity of 1,500, the number of people inside at the time of the collapse remains unclear. Officials confirmed the tent had passed a county building inspection just three days prior. Governor Abigail Spanberger's office is in contact with response crews, offering support to the community during this difficult time. An investigation into the cause of the collapse is underway.
