Tepic International Airport will keep the name of Amado Nervo

Tepic International Airport will keep the name of Amado Nervo, the Nayarit-born poet, after a campaign to prevent the name from being replaced by the commercial brand “Riviera Nayarit.”

President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the decision on Saturday during the Honestidad y Resultados event at the Tepic fairgrounds. She also announced that the airport expansion will take place in December.

Lorena Elizabeth Hernández, founder of the Letras en Nayarit Festival, led the initiative. For three years, she opposed changing the terminal’s name and removing Nervo from it. The festival issued a statement and launched a Change.org petition on the poet’s birthday, attracting support from figures including Elena Poniatowska, Ángeles Mastretta, Juan Villoro, Élmer Mendoza, Enrique Serna, David Toscana, Horacio Franco and Alberto Ruy Sánchez.

José Miguel Bejos, president of Mota-Engil México, said in an interview with Joaquín López-Dóriga that the poet’s absence resulted from an omission by the company and apologized to the Nayarit community. He also said the company would seek to reflect Nervo’s legacy in the airport infrastructure after the public campaign.

Hernández celebrated the preservation of the poet’s name, saying, “Marketing will never be able to take precedence over culture.”
