Tesla recalls nearly 3 million vehicles in China over emergency door handle issue

Tesla is initiating its largest-ever recall in China, affecting approximately 3 million vehicles manufactured or imported into the country. The recall, set to begin on September 25, addresses a potential safety concern related to the emergency door release handle in Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles.

The issue stems from the possibility that the emergency door opening handle might be difficult for occupants or rescuers to locate in the event of a collision, potentially delaying escape or rescue operations. To mitigate this risk, Tesla will implement a wireless software update (OTA) that automatically lowers the windows during a crash, facilitating easier egress.

In addition to the software update, Tesla will also attach warning labels to the affected vehicles. This recall is part of Tesla's ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and reliability of its electric vehicles in the crucial Chinese market.

Furthermore, Tesla is conducting a separate recall for 2.74 million China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. This action focuses on strengthening the monitoring function for driver attention when using driver-assistance features like assisted steering. The goal is to reduce the risk of collisions that could occur if a driver fails to respond promptly to system warnings.
