Tesla taxis without steering wheels or pedals are now operating in the United States

Tesla’s newest robotaxi has reached U.S. streets without the equipment drivers normally expect. The Cybercab, now offering rides in Austin, Texas, has no steering wheel, brake pedal or conventional rearview mirrors, and its cabin holds only two passengers.

Tesla designed the electric vehicle from the start around autonomous operation, rather than adapting a conventional Model 3 or Model Y. The Cybercab weighs about 1,412 kilograms, uses a lithium-ion battery and has an electric motor producing roughly 219 horsepower. It also uses front-wheel drive.

Tesla began producing the Cybercab in 2026. In July, employees took rides inside the company’s Texas Gigafactory as part of testing before the vehicle joined the Robotaxi fleet. The robotaxi service itself began in Austin in June 2025 with production vehicles such as the Model Y. By July 2026, Tesla reported unsupervised rides in Miami, Orlando and Tampa.

In early September, Texas had 420 registered autonomous Tesla vehicles, 45 of them Cybercabs. At almost the same time that Tesla began putting the new vehicles into circulation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into how they had been certified. The inquiry focuses on the absence of conventional controls and mirrors while several federal safety rules were developed around vehicles that have them.
