Tesla teases launch of 'Cybercab' self-driving robotaxi

Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla is generating buzz for its upcoming self-driving robotaxi, the 'Cybercab,' with promotional efforts hinting at a September 3 launch event in Austin, Texas. The company is offering a sweepstakes for exclusive access to this event, inviting potential attendees to celebrate the debut of its autonomous taxi service.

The Cybercab, initially revealed in October 2024, is a distinctive gold-colored vehicle designed for two passengers. Notably, it represents Tesla's first car model entirely devoid of a steering wheel or pedals, emphasizing its fully autonomous capabilities. Elon Musk previously indicated plans for production to commence before 2027, with an anticipated retail price point below $30,000 for private buyers.

According to reports from The Information, Tesla employees will be the first to experience the Cybercab on public roads. This initial phase will pave the way for the vehicle's incorporation into Tesla's existing Robotaxi service, which has been gradually expanding in cities across Texas, Florida, and California. However, current state laws often mandate a human supervisor to be present in self-driving vehicles.

Tesla's move into the robotaxi market positions it to compete directly with established players like Waymo, Google's autonomous vehicle subsidiary, which currently operates in 11 U.S. cities. Recent sightings of numerous Cybercabs in parking lots have fueled speculation about an imminent launch, adding to the anticipation surrounding Tesla's autonomous driving ambitions.
