Texas shooting leaves 1 dead, at least 9 injured, officials say

One person died and nine others were injured in a shooting Friday in Midland, Texas, where a suspect remained in a standoff with officers for about two hours after the incident. The shooting began around 8 a.m. in one area of the city before moving near a veterinary hospital.

Andrea Mendias, who works at an automobile body shop close to the veterinary hospital, reported hearing what sounded like at least 40 shots. Video footage showed numerous officers exiting an armored police vehicle, and robots were deployed to the scene. Mayor Lori Blong stated that officers were containing the situation.

Midland Memorial Hospital reported that four individuals were in surgery, while five others were in stable condition. Midland, a West Texas city of approximately 140,000 residents, is situated in the core of the state's oil industry region. This area was also the site of a fatal shooting spree six years ago, where a gunman killed seven people and wounded two dozen others while driving through Odessa and Midland.
