Texas town near Austin sees influx of residents with median home price of $194,900

The small Texas community of Maxwell, located south of Austin, has emerged as a top destination for movers, ranking tenth nationally for resident relocations per capita during the first half of 2026. The area's postal code, 78656, recorded a median home value of $194,900, making it the most affordable among the top ten destinations identified in a semiannual report by Moving Place.

Maxwell saw 84.32 moves per 1,000 residents, contributing to Texas's overall dominance in residential relocation. Two other Texas communities, Crandall (75114) and Lavon (75166), also secured spots in the top ten, ranking second and fourth respectively. Crandall had 105.69 moves per 1,000 residents, with a median home price of $275,100, while Lavon recorded 103.61 moves and a median home price of $385,000.

This influx of new residents to Maxwell is largely attributed to its strategic location within the expanding Austin metropolitan area. Buyers are increasingly looking for housing options outside the pricier urban core, and Maxwell offers a compelling combination of lower residential values, available land, and convenient access to one of Texas's major employment hubs. Daniel Cobb, senior editor at MovingPlace, noted that demand is concentrated in fast-growing suburbs and lifestyle-oriented communities, many of which benefit from new housing developments and proximity to large job centers.

Nationally, the Moving Place study tracked over 5.29 million moves in the U.S. between January and June 2026. Texas led all states in total moves with 512,503, followed by California and Florida. Eight of the top ten postal codes for absolute move volume were also in Texas, with New Braunfels and McKinney topping that specific list.
