Thai cave rescuers work to free seven people trapped in flooded Laos cave

A desperate rescue operation is underway in central Laos to save seven villagers trapped inside a flooded cave for five days. The group ventured into the cave in Xaysomboun province, northeast of the capital Vientiane, reportedly searching for gold. Their exploration turned perilous when heavy rains caused flash floods, blocking the cave's exit and trapping them inside.

Rescuers, including local authorities and volunteers, are battling difficult conditions, pumping water out of the cave while navigating narrow, muddy passages. The situation remains critical, with uncertainty about the trapped individuals' condition. "We still do not know whether there are any signs of life or if they are still alive," stated Bounkham Luanglat, president of a Laotian volunteer rescue association, highlighting the urgency of the mission.

Adding to the expertise on site, two Thai cave rescue specialists and a Finnish expert who were instrumental in the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in Thailand have arrived to aid the efforts. The Laotian rescue group had appealed to Thai charities for specialized personnel and equipment, including water pumps and thermal imaging devices, to bolster their capabilities in locating and extracting the trapped villagers.

About 100 people from both Laos and Thailand are now involved in the complex operation. Thai rescuer Chakkit Taengtan described the challenges, noting the ongoing rain and rising water levels inside the cave system, which extends deep underground with multiple levels. The remote location of the cave system further complicates the rescue, demanding significant logistical support and resilience from the teams involved.
