Thai PM vows to introduce stricter gun laws after eight killed in shooting

Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has vowed to implement tougher gun control measures after a 14-year-old student fatally shot eight people in a Bangkok suburb. The teenager first killed his grandparents at their home before proceeding to Debsirin School, where he was a student. There, he fatally shot five teachers before ending his own life. Thai media later reported an additional student death from injuries sustained in the attack. Prime Minister Charnvirakul announced plans for new legislation that would significantly restrict the carrying of firearms in public spaces. Under the proposed laws, only government officials actively on duty would be permitted to carry guns. Initial police investigations revealed the firearm and ammunition used in the attack belonged to the teen's grandfather. Reports indicate the gun was legally registered and possessed a permit. Thailand has a high rate of civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia, with millions of firearms in circulation, many illegally held. "This tragedy shouldn't have happened," Charnvirakul stated, expressing sorrow not only for the victims but also for the circumstances that allowed such an event to occur in the country.
