Thailand: Gunman kills one at government office; second shooting tragedy in days

Thailand is grappling with a second major gun violence incident in less than a week after a former politician opened fire at a local government office on the outskirts of Bangkok. The attack resulted in the death of one man and injuries to another.

The victim, Thongchai Yenprasert, a former colonel and head of the provincial administrative organization, died in hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to the neck. His driver was treated for non-life-threatening injuries to his arm and hand. Police identified the suspect as Chalong Reawraeng, a former member of Thailand's House of Representatives, who allegedly had a long-standing financial dispute with Yenprasert.

Chalong reportedly confessed to the attack in a phone call to a political commentator, who livestreamed the confession on YouTube. Chalong was formerly associated with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's party. The shooting occurred in Nonthaburi province, north of Bangkok.

This latest tragedy follows a horrific school shooting just three days earlier in the same region, which claimed nine lives, including the shooter's. That incident, Thailand's deadliest mass shooting in nearly four years, has intensified scrutiny over the country's gun control measures. Prime Minister Charnvirakul has reiterated his commitment to tightening regulations following the school massacre, with new safety protocols and stricter enforcement against public gun carrying being implemented.
