Thailand school shooting toll climbs to nine after girl dies from wounds

The death toll from a shooting at a high school and a private home outside Bangkok has risen to at least nine, following the death of a 12-year-old girl from critical wounds on Saturday.

The 14-year-old perpetrator reportedly began his rampage around 10 a.m. Friday at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province. Officials believe he first killed his two grandparents at their home earlier that morning before proceeding to the school, where he apparently took his own life after the attack.

Of the 14 individuals hospitalized, seven remained in critical condition as of Saturday, according to Thailand's Ministry of Health. The majority of those injured were students between the ages of 12 and 14. Relatives have begun claiming the bodies of eight victims from Bangkok's Institute of Forensic Medicine, including five school staff members, the alleged shooter, and his grandparents.

Forensic examination revealed that most victims sustained a single fatal gunshot wound to a vital area, such as the chest or head. The wound on the alleged shooter was consistent with the weapon used. More detailed forensic findings, including toxicology results, are pending.

Authorities reported that the firearm, described as small and compact, was legally registered to the shooter's grandfather. While some relatives indicated the boy, who lived with his grandparents, had shown signs of stress related to school, others stated they were unaware of any specific troubles he might have been experiencing. The school, which has approximately 3,000 students aged 12 to 18, announced classes would be suspended from August 10 to August 14, with staff instructed to work remotely.
