Thailand targets top wellness destination status in Asia within three years

Thailand is setting its sights on becoming a premier hub for wellness and longevity in Asia within the next three years. The government's ambitious strategy involves a significant push to merge advanced medical technology with time-honored Thai traditional medicine, supported by robust infrastructure development.

Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat announced the plan, emphasizing the transformation of the nation's medical and wellness sector into a key economic driver. This initiative is particularly timely as Thailand prepares to host the 2026 Global Wellness Summit in Phuket from November 10-13. The summit, celebrating its 20th anniversary, is anticipated to draw over 600 global leaders in business, medicine, academia, and technology, with an expected economic impact of at least 300 million baht.

Globally, the wellness economy is experiencing substantial growth, projected by the Global Wellness Institute to expand by 7.6% annually from 2024 to 2029, reaching $9.8 trillion. This expansion is fueled by an aging population managing chronic conditions, increasing consumer interest in longevity and mental well-being, and greater investment in health infrastructure. Asia is a significant contributor, accounting for approximately $2 trillion of the global market and leading with a 31% annual growth rate. Thailand's wellness market has shown resilience, rebounding to $43 billion in 2024 after a pandemic-induced dip, positioning it as the ninth-largest market in the Asia-Pacific region.
