Retired sprint legend Asafa Powell has shared a deeply emotional tribute following the death of his longtime coach and mentor, Stephen Francis. Francis, a revered figure in Jamaican track and field, passed away on Saturday, just one day after celebrating his 64th birthday.

Powell expressed his profound grief and disbelief on Instagram, describing Francis as more than a coach. "For over 20 years, my coach was a father, a brother, a friend," Powell wrote, reflecting on their decades-long relationship. He recalled how Francis brought him from rural Jamaica to Kingston, nurtured his aspirations when he lacked them, and instilled the self-belief necessary to achieve his dreams and break records.

My heart aches as I say goodbye to the man who saw in me what I couldn’t see in myself. For over 20 years, my coach was a father, a brother, a friend. He brought me from the countryside from Charlemont High School to Kingston, held a dream when I had none, and taught me to believe in myself, told me I could break records. I’m so grateful that I was a part of his dream and made it come true.

The sprint icon extended heartfelt thanks to Francis for his unwavering belief, guidance, and discipline. "Thank you for your guidance, your discipline, and for pushing me to become the athlete and the man that I am today," Powell stated. He emphasized that many of his career's greatest moments were made possible by Francis's conviction in his potential.
