The academic slump: Swiss graduates face higher unemployment, temporary, part-time jobs

Switzerland's traditional path to success through higher education is showing signs of strain, as new figures from the Federal Statistical Office reveal a concerning trend for university graduates. The number of students has doubled between 2000 and 2020, leading to increased competition in the job market.

Recent data indicates a rise in unemployment among academics. Between 2023 and 2025, the unemployment rate for university graduates one year after completing their Master's degrees climbed from 3.9% to 6.4%, and for Bachelor's graduates, it rose from 3.4% to 4.9%. These figures now approach or exceed the overall unemployment rate of 4.8% for the general population.

The situation is particularly challenging for graduates in fields such as music, theater, arts, design, and applied linguistics from universities of applied sciences, where nearly one in ten struggle to find employment. Graduates in interdisciplinary or niche university programs, including urban studies, also face difficulties, with an 8.6% unemployment rate. The unemployment rate in humanities and social sciences has notably increased from 5.1% to 8.5%.

Conversely, graduates in fields like medicine and pharmacy continue to enjoy strong job prospects, with unemployment rates below 2%. Similarly, graduates in health and social work from universities of applied sciences also find stable employment readily. However, the downturn is not limited to niche subjects, as even graduates in university economics programs have seen their unemployment rates rise significantly in just two years.
