The athlete who has never held her Olympic medal

South Korea's former President Yoon Suk-yeol has officially lost his license to practice law after a final court ruling sentenced him to seven years in prison for obstructing justice. The Ministry of Justice issued an administrative order on the 29th, directing the Korean Bar Association to formally cancel Yoon's license, effectively ending his 30-year legal career.

The conviction relates to an incident on January 3, 2025, when Yoon, then impeached and suspended from office, allegedly instructed presidential security personnel to create a human barrier in front of his residence. This action was intended to prevent officials from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIOH) from executing an arrest warrant. The Supreme Court upheld the conviction on July 9th of this year, sentencing Yoon to seven years imprisonment for charges including obstruction of special official duty and abuse of power.

Beyond the obstruction of justice case, Yoon is entangled in several other significant criminal proceedings. He is currently on trial for charges of inciting rebellion by declaring martial law in December 2024, for which he received a life sentence in the first trial in February. Additionally, he was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, suspended for three years, on July 27th for lying during the 2022 presidential election campaign about his acquaintance with a shaman named Jeon Sung-bae. Yoon's defense team has appealed this latter conviction.
