The FAI picks a side and it’s official – Gianni Infantino has lost Ireland

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has officially declared its lack of support for Gianni Infantino's re-election as FIFA president, joining a growing chorus of European football bodies expressing dissatisfaction. The FAI confirmed on Thursday it is rescinding a previous letter of support, citing governance, transparency, and consultation issues that have been highlighted by recent FIFA decisions, such as plans to sell a stake in the World Cup.

While the FAI's move is significant, questions linger about its timing. Senior European football figures have noted that other national associations, like Wales and England, acted sooner. The FAI, described as a "sclerotic organisation" but with a chief executive known for caution and adherence to procedure, required a board meeting to formally agree on withdrawing support. This deliberate process underscores the FAI's methodical approach.

The FAI now stands with a notable list of European nations, including England, Germany, and Sweden, in opposing Infantino's re-election. Initially expected to run unopposed, Infantino sought letters of support from member associations. Despite securing numerous endorsements, including the FAI's initial backing, he is now experiencing a significant loss of support.

UEFA, along with the heads of the Asian and North American confederations, has publicly stated its loss of confidence in Infantino. However, in FIFA's presidential election, individual member nations hold the voting power. Infantino's strategy now focuses on splitting these votes, making the FAI's symbolic withdrawal particularly impactful. By aligning with UEFA, its primary revenue source and partner in co-hosting Euro 2028, the FAI has made a clear choice, prioritizing its European ties despite potential implications for participation in certain upcoming matches.
