Canada is set to implement retaliatory tariffs on more than 700 American products, escalating the trade dispute between the two nations. The tariffs will take effect at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8. These measures will include 15, 25, and 50 percent counter-tariffs on goods previously targeted by the U.S. under its Section 338 and Section 232 tariffs. The value of these Canadian tariffs will equal $27.6 billion in imports from the United States.

The Canadian government will specifically target sectors that have been most affected by U.S. tariffs. These include steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. The announcement came from Ottawa, where Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu, and Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon gathered to detail Canada's response.

This action follows the breakdown of trade talks between Canada and the U.S. late Friday night. Prime Minister Mark Carney had previously stated that Ottawa would retaliate with "dollar-for-dollar" tariffs. The list of impacted American goods includes a wide range of industrial and consumer products, from tools and air conditioning units to industrial robots and agricultural machinery.
