The jobs set to be in highest demand by 2035 as AI and an aging population reshape work

Artificial intelligence, renewable energy and an aging population are set to reshape the American labor market over the next decade. New projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics identify the occupations expected to see the sharpest growth by 2035.

Healthcare dominates the ranking. Specialized nurse practitioners hold the top position, with employment projected to increase by 41% between 2025 and 2035. The occupation employed about 336,300 people in 2025, a figure expected to reach 474,100 by 2035, adding nearly 138,000 jobs.

The BLS links that expansion to rising demand for medical services as the population ages and chronic conditions become more common. The private healthcare and social assistance sector is expected to add more than 2.2 million jobs by 2035, about 37% of all new jobs projected across the U.S. economy. Healthcare also features prominently elsewhere in the ranking: medical and health services managers are projected to grow 24.2%, physical therapist assistants 23%, psychiatric technicians 22.3% and occupational therapy assistants 21.5%.

Renewable energy occupations are also climbing rapidly. Solar photovoltaic installers rank second, with employment expected to grow 36.5%, from about 31,100 workers in 2025 to 42,400 in 2035. Wind turbine service technicians rank fourth, with projected growth of 29.5%, from 11,800 to 15,300 workers.

The two renewable-energy occupations are among the fastest-growing in the economy, but their high percentages translate into fewer than 15,000 additional jobs combined. Overall, the BLS projects that the U.S. economy will add about 5.9 million jobs between 2025 and 2035, while total employment rises 3.5%.
