‘The Odyssey’ Earns $87M in its 2nd Weekend

Christopher Nolan's epic "The Odyssey" continues its powerful run at the box office, earning an estimated $87 million in its second weekend in North American theaters. This figure represents a remarkably modest 30% drop from its opening weekend, a rare feat for a blockbuster of its scale. The film's performance marks Nolan's best second weekend ever, surpassing even "The Dark Knight's" $75.2 million in 2008, not accounting for inflation.

Globally, "The Odyssey" has amassed an impressive $639.6 million, with $128.3 million coming from international markets. The demand for the film has led theaters worldwide to add showtimes, according to Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak's head of marketplace trends. Premium large format screens, particularly IMAX, have been major contributors, accounting for $48 million of the global earnings this weekend alone. The exclusive 70 mm IMAX screens, limited to 41 worldwide, generated $5.2 million, with most showtimes sold out through September.

While "The Odyssey" has benefited from a lack of significant new competition, its dominance may face a challenge next weekend with the release of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day." Analysts predict the latter could achieve the year's biggest opening weekend. However, Nolan's film is expected to retain most IMAX screens for several more weeks. In other box office news, Disney's "Moana" and "Toy Story 5" secured second and third place respectively, with "Toy Story 5" surpassing $1 billion globally. Bleecker Street's "Hadestown: The Musical" rounded out the top five, and Olivia Wilde's "The Invite" continues its successful platform release. The overall summer box office has surpassed $3 billion, nearing pre-pandemic levels.
