The Plaza hotel to undergo major renovation, aiming for seven-star status by 2029

The Plaza hotel, a landmark in Seoul operated by Hanwha Hotels & Resorts, is embarking on a comprehensive renovation to elevate itself to a "seven-star high-end hotel." This ambitious project, the first major overhaul in approximately 16 years, is slated for completion in 2029.

The hotel will temporarily close its doors on October 30th, with construction expected to commence in early next year and last for about three years. A company representative confirmed that architectural permits are secured, and demolition review is underway, with plans to finalize the project in coordination with local authorities.

Key aspects of the renovation include expanding top-tier suites and creating premium business spaces, attracting world-class fine dining establishments, strengthening cultural and artistic content, and increasing public relaxation areas. Notably, the hotel's exterior will retain its original design to honor its 50-year heritage.

The revamped hotel aims to cater to global VIPs, including government officials and business leaders, by reconfiguring spaces to include more high-end suites with integrated workspaces and enhancing the club lounge. The food and beverage offerings will be bolstered by attracting Michelin-starred restaurants, and the hotel is pursuing membership in The Leading Hotels of the World.

In a move to integrate with the community, parts of the hotel will be accessible to the public. A dedicated elevator will lead to a rooftop garden offering panoramic views of Seoul's historical sites. This renovation is part of a broader redevelopment of the Sogong district, which involves modernizing three aging buildings into a comprehensive urban center featuring hotel, office, cultural, and commercial functions. The project also aligns with Hanwha Group's "high-end strategy," positioning The Plaza alongside other luxury ventures like the ANTO resort and the Galleria Department Store.
