The Saw Doctors Bring Mayo’s All-Ireland Champions on Stage at Electric Picnic

Mayo’s All-Ireland champions walked onto the Electric Picnic Main Stage as The Saw Doctors performed “Green and Red of Mayo,” giving a drenched crowd one of the festival’s most memorable moments.

Thousands of fans packed the arena in green, red and raincoats for the Sunday-afternoon performance. The band moved from “To Win Just Once” into its unofficial Mayo GAA anthem, while the victorious team processed onto the stage. The song, released in 1992, became the backing track to Mayo’s historic Sam Maguire win the previous month, ending a wait described as 75 years in the making.

The crowd waved Mayo jerseys and flags, along with improvised hats made from Supermac’s bags. As the song built toward the line “forever more,” the atmosphere recalled the celebrations at Croke Park after the final. One soaked reveller said the moment brought back the same chills as watching Mayo win.

Rain continued through much of the set, fittingly beginning with “Will It Ever Stop Raining?” The weather eased only during “N17,” the penultimate song. Davy Carton also offered a nod to the Galway ladies team, which won its second TG4 All-Ireland senior football championship earlier in the month. For a band closely associated with Ireland’s west, the afternoon’s references landed especially strongly.
