The United States Launches a New Attack on Iran

The United States has launched another round of strikes against Iran, moving Washington further away from the economic-pressure strategy it had pursued in recent weeks. U.S. Central Command said the attacks targeted the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps inside Iran.

The command linked the operation to what it described as recent IRGC attempts to attack commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and U.S. service members stationed in the Middle East.

The latest action followed a night of reciprocal attacks, the first direct military exchange between the two countries in more than a month. Iranian authorities said they had fired missiles at U.S. military positions in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. Tehran described those strikes as a response to a U.S. attack on Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island. Washington, meanwhile, accused Iran of trying to lay naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

The waterway is a major global route for energy shipments and has become a central flashpoint in the region’s security tensions and diplomatic negotiations. The renewed exchanges have revived fears of a broader conflict.

President Donald Trump sought to play down the prospect of a much larger U.S. operation. Asked about possible further moves against Iran, he said they would be “very limited.” Trump also claimed that Iran’s military capabilities had been badly weakened during what he described as a six-month war. “Their navy is gone. Their air force is gone. Their surveillance equipment is almost completely destroyed,” he said. “That doesn’t mean we won’t hit them. We’ll see what happens.”

Trump said conditions in the Strait of Hormuz were “extremely good” and that many vessels had resumed passage. Shipping-tracking data cited in the report showed traffic had not yet returned to the levels recorded before the war began.
