Former U.S. President Donald Trump has declared his indifference towards the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), asserting that Mexico and Canada are more dependent on the U.S. than vice versa. Trump stated in an interview with Fox News that he "doesn't care" about the trade deal and would prefer the U.S. to remain independent.

"Mexico and Canada need us. We don't need them. The agreement is important for them. It is not important for us," Trump said, responding to a question about potentially updating the USMCA. This stance echoes his previous criticisms of trade agreements, which he has often argued disadvantage the United States.

Trump also defended his tariff policies, claiming they have incentivized automakers to relocate plants from Mexico back to the United States. The U.S. has agreed to annual reviews of the USMCA until 2036, rather than the 16-year renewal term sought by Mexico and Canada.

Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has been engaged in discussions regarding the trade agreement. She recently met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer for the third round of talks. Sheinbaum indicated progress was being made, emphasizing the need for "greater rules of origin" and expressing her administration's desire to extend the treaty beyond 10 years. These differing perspectives highlight ongoing tensions and negotiations surrounding North American trade.
