The world's largest alfajor was made in Recoleta

A giant alfajor weighing 3,162 kilograms has set a Guinness World Record in Recoleta, Buenos Aires, replacing a mark that had belonged to Uruguay for nearly 16 years.

The record-breaking confection was made on Saturday at Plaza de las Naciones Unidas during the “Cafecito BA” event. Streamer Iván “Spreen” Buhajeruk attended the challenge and drew followers who gathered around the square from early in the day.

The recipe required 1,400 kilograms of dulce de leche, 400 kilograms of chocolate, 800 kilograms of flour, more than 250 trays of eggs and 100 kilograms of honey, along with other ingredients. Its scale bore little resemblance to the familiar kiosk-sized alfajor.

Uruguay's previous record was set on Dec. 12, 2010, when Alfajores de las Sierras de Minas made a 464-kilogram alfajor in the city of Minas. Argentina had made earlier attempts, including a confection weighing more than 2,000 kilograms in Gualeguaychú and another weighing 720 kilograms in Mar del Plata, but neither received official Guinness certification.

This time, an official judge monitored the weighing. More than 100 professors and students from the Instituto Gastronómico Internacional, together with members of the Kilómetro del Alfajor Argentino, handled the preparation and assembly. After the new record was announced, the celebration moved to the next stage: tasting the giant alfajor.
