This Week’s Business in Parliament

Sri Lanka’s Parliament is set to meet from Sept. 8 to 11, with the week’s business ranging from government questions and regulatory measures to private members’ motions.

On Tuesday, lawmakers will debate two orders published in extraordinary gazettes under the Motor Traffic Act. The debate is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by an opposition adjournment motion.

Wednesday’s agenda includes questions to the prime minister and a second-reading debate on the Chief of Defence Staff (Removal) Bill. On Thursday, Parliament will debate resolutions under the Women’s Empowerment Act before considering a government adjournment motion.

Friday’s sitting will focus on private members’ motions. The proposals listed include bringing the petroleum, fuel and water industries under the regulation of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka, providing incentives to families to increase the country’s birth rate, protecting Diyagama Forest and addressing pension arrangements for Pirivena teachers. The schedule was decided at a recent meeting chaired by Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne, according to Secretary-General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera.
