Thousands flee wildfires in France as flames consume thousands of hectares

Wildfires are forcing thousands to flee in southwestern France, with six campsites and a residential area in the Gironde department evacuated. More than 20,000 people have been displaced as the blazes have scorched over 3,000 hectares.

Sofia Krigsman, a Swedish tourist near one of the largest fires, described packing her bags and monitoring news reports. She noted that emergency plans include boat evacuations if the fire spreads. While feeling some unease, she expressed confidence in the preparedness measures. "It is a large beautiful pine forest, so it is terrible to see such extensive damage to nature," she said.

Meanwhile, Italy is battling dozens of fires across Sicily and the Calabria region. Thousands of firefighters, forest rangers, and civil defense workers are engaged in the efforts. Authorities in Calabria have pointed to arson, with reports of individuals tying rags soaked in flammable liquid to stray cats' tails to spread the flames.

In Spain, residents evacuated from the city of Toledo have largely returned home as firefighters made progress in controlling a wildfire. The Spanish emergency services reported these developments.
