Thousands gather at Western Wall for Tisha B'Av lamentations

Thousands of people converged at the Western Wall on Wednesday night to observe Tisha B'Av, a solemn day commemorating the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem and numerous other tragedies in Jewish history.

The observance included prayers and the reading of the Book of Lamentations, also known as Megillat Eicha. This biblical text, attributed to the prophet Jeremiah, laments the fall of Jerusalem and the subsequent exile from the Land of Israel. Tisha B'Av is fundamentally a fast day, during which observant Jews abstain from all food and water for approximately 25 hours, from sunset to nightfall the following day.

Among the attendees were prominent political figures, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, former prime minister Naftali Bennett, and Yashar Party leader Gadi Eisenkot. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a speech on the eve of Tisha B'Av, asserted that Israelis had prevented the "destruction of the Third Temple" over the past three years, praising the nation's bravery and achievements.

The day marks a series of historical calamities. These include the Roman destruction of Betar and the suppression of the Bar Kochba revolt, expulsions from England, France, and Spain, the onset of World War I, the approval of the Nazi "Final Solution," and the mass deportation of Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto. Other events cited include the First Crusade, the 1994 bombing of the AMIA building in Argentina, Israel's 2005 Disengagement from Gaza, and the recent controversial judicial reform legislation.
