Thousands of Lightning Strikes as Severe Storm Hits Southern Sweden

A powerful thunderstorm swept across southern Sweden on Sunday afternoon, unleashing heavy rain, hail, and a barrage of lightning. The storm, which was most intense from Småland up to southern Gästrikland, generated around 4,000 lightning strikes throughout the day, according to preliminary figures.

The severe weather caused significant disruptions in several areas. In Kalmar, the Allsvenskan football match between Kalmar FF and Örgryte IS was temporarily halted due to the intense thunder and lightning. Meanwhile, parts of Norrbotten experienced substantial rainfall, with Rödkallen recording over 52.6 millimeters of rain, as reported by SMHI's preliminary data.

The storm's impact was felt across multiple counties, highlighting the volatile weather patterns affecting the region. While the lightning was a prominent feature, the accompanying heavy rain and hail also contributed to the challenging conditions experienced by residents.
